The Michigan Bear Hunters Association, which is a tax-exempt 501 (c) 3 corporation, created the MBHA/Bill Walker Scholarship in 2001 to benefit society by encouraging people to pursue higher education.

Since 2002, the first year the Michigan Bear Hunters Association/Bill Walker Scholarship program granted awards, 60 students have received $36,000 to help pay their college tuition.

The scholarship, named after a longtime leader and former president of MBHA, is for those attending or soon to be attending a college or technical institution. Applicants must have maintained a grade point average of 2.0 or better.

Applicants must submit several documents, including grade transcripts, two letters of recommendation and an essay outlining career aspirations and views on hunting and natural resources.

Scholarships are awarded each March to successful applicants. MBHA has an annual scholarship budget of $2,000, which can be distributed in any amount and way the scholarship committee sees fit. MBHA sends the scholarship money directly to the college or technical institution.
